The Anabaptist leader Hans Denck (1495-1527) was a persecuted immigrant. Well known for having stated, “No one can truly know Christ, except by following him in life,” Denck specifically called for tolerance of immigrants: “In matters of faith, everyone should proceed as free, voluntary and uncompelled. . . . Every person [should] permit every other person, be they Turk or heathen . . . to dwell and move in every land.”
