A series of deadly storms and tornadoes tore through six Midwestern states Dec. 10-11, killing at least 88 people, with the most severe devastation in Kentucky, where entire towns were leveled.
Mennonite Disaster Service reported Dec. 13 that its Early Response Teams were investigating several sites to help determine how the Lititz, Pa.-based organization will respond. Volunteers can join a waitlist by sending their contact information to volunteer@mds.org.
Christian Aid Ministries, a conservative Anabaptist organization based in Berlin, Ohio, reported CAM Rapid Response team members were investigating needs Dec. 11 in Kentucky and Tennessee. One team member reported “very extensive damage that doesn’t seem to end.”
Four members of an Amish family died when the storm passed through the Mayfield, Ky., area. The Washington Post reported the bodies of Jacob and Emma Gingrich, both 31, along with 7-year-old Marilyn and 4-year-old Daniel, were found near the family’s double-wide trailer. Three other children survived.
