In my Bible courses I learned that two Words guide us in our Christian walk: the Word of God written and the Word of God incarnate. When we are unable to agree on the interpretation of the Bible, the written Word, we then ask, What does the incarnate Word tell us (John 1:14)? What does the Word say as lived out in the life of Jesus? What agrees with the spirit, the attitude and the actions of Jesus? Asking this question helps protect us from thinking of the Bible as a book of laws. Sometimes we may know what the incarnate Word is saying, but, not liking the answer, we avoid that question.
