Based on his 10-point way to tell if your church is “woke,” Pierre Gilbert (writing in Mennonite Brethren Herald, summarized in a Nov. 3 “Currents” item in AW) seems to assume “woke” is bad. But one who isn’t woke is asleep, anesthetized, comatose or dead. Social justice is taught in Scripture. We are exhorted to feed the hungry and give water to the thirsty. Surely, these are social justice issues. Christ says, “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden.” This seems to speak to diversity and inclusion. In his epistle, James rails against people who “bless” someone without tending to their physical needs. Maybe we need to rethink “wokeness.”
