Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church in Kansas held a prayer service and candlelight vigil July 14 after a 14-year-old attendee, Madison Elizabeth Parrott, was fatally shot July 11 in Newton.
The suspect is a 16-year-old Newton male who police said was intoxicated when he arrived at a house where Parrott and others had gathered. He faces counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal threat.
An investigation into how the suspect acquired the gun is ongoing. Prosecutors had not discussed with District Judge Marilyn Wilder whether the suspect will be charged as a juvenile or adult.
A memorial service was held July 19 at Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church, the family’s home church.
