Call for submissions: We want contributions from you! Young people of faith who are passionate about justice and advocacy. We are interested in reflections (try to keep it to 600 words), poems, songs, and visual art pieces.
Our theme for the 2026 Winter issue: Hope and Lament
Organizer and activist Mariame Kaba said, “Hope doesn’t preclude feeling sadness or frustration or anger or any other emotion that makes total sense. Hope isn’t an emotion, you know? Hope is not optimism. Hope is a discipline… we have to practice it every single day.”
Do you agree with this quote? In today’s world it seems like we must actively foster a feeling of hope to keep going. When we are confronted by the unjust systems of the world we might feel paralyzed into thinking: ‘How can I help? Where do I even start?’ Can we hold this lament as we practice hope and work towards a better day?
Questions to consider:
- Where and/or how do you practice hope?
- What role does Faith have in building/developing hope?
- What gives you hope? / What motivates you to act for a better world?
- What music or song do you listen to when you need uplifting?
- What are you lamenting in this time? / What is the role of lament as we work towards a brighter future?
- How can you identify with those who are suffering? How can you lament without giving in to despair?
- Jesus flipped the tables in the temple. He found a way to feed the 5000. He responded to the needs he saw before him. How do you respond to the needs you see in your community?
