Nearly 700 people gathered Feb. 16 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Iglesia Evangélica Menonita Boliviana (Bolivian Mennonite Evangelical Church).
The IEMB emerged from the efforts of Mennonite Central Committee workers, whose Bible study groups planted the seeds of what would become a thriving network of congregations. Their efforts were bolstered by the predecessor agencies of Mennonite Mission Network, which provided support through mission workers from both South and North America.
Among the honored guests were early mission workers Beatriz Barrios from Uruguay and Steven “Tig” Intagliata from the United States. Their stories of perseverance and faith reminded attendees of the sacrifices and dedication that shaped the church.
Linda Shelly, MMN director for Latin America, presented certificates to recognize congregations’ contributions. The event was filled with worship, shared meals and storytelling as members recounted milestones and miracles that have defined the IEMB’s journey.
