Of all the fine articles in the Oct. 29 issue, the one that touched me most was the column by Sarah Augustine, “Could you walk away from all this?” As a poor, working-class, colonized person, Jesus announced jubilee in Luke 4:18-20 to a people who furiously drove him from their town. As an equally colonized Pueblo descendant, Augustine identifies with him and asks, “What if this mandate to bring good news to the poor was meant not only for Jesus but for all of us?” This is an example of how ancient Scripture has the power to penetrate our lives in current situations. The parable by Ursula K. Le Guin, with which she ends the column, drives home the point. Even if it hurts.
