Mennonite Central Committee Canada has been awarded a grant of $4.7 million ($3.25 million U.S.) for humanitarian aid in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The funds come at a time of great need. The conflict between the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congolese army has escalated, worsening a humanitarian crisis affecting 11 million people.

The grant, from Global Affairs Canada, will fund locally purchased household and hygiene items as well as cash support to an estimated 9,000 people.

The project also includes additional activities and training to mitigate increased risk and respond to sexual and gender-based violence against vulnerable women and girls. The project began in January and will run until December 2026.
