CHICAGO — Mennonite World Review won four awards April 28 at the annual convention of Associated Church Press.

Editor Paul Schrag received a second-place Award of Merit in “editorial or opinion piece: newspaper/newsletter/magazine/journal” for “Self-Inflicted Wound: A Dissenter Can Be a Faithful National Leader,” published June 20.

Columnist Hillary Watson received a third-place Honorable Mention in “column in a newspaper, news service, newsletter, website or blog” for “Gathering the Stones.”

Ben Goossen received a third-place Honorable Mention in “personal experience/first-person account (long format): newspaper/newsletter” for “Legacy of a Mennonite State: Settlers’ Colonialism Still Shapes German-Speaking Communities of Paraguay,” published April 11.

MWR received a first-place Award of Excellence in “art/design/graphics: newspaper front page” for the Aug. 29 issue (pictured above). The judge said the page “powerfully shows the reach and vision of Mennonites” with “an enticing mix of stories. Yet the page doesn’t neglect a homey touch — running a caption-only photo of two smiling preteens on their first day at a Mennonite school in Sarasota, Fla.”
