Low German Mennonites from across Latin America continue to seek out opportunities to acquire land for new settlements around the world. Die Mennonitische Post reported a group of six people traveled from Paraguay to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo May 12-22.
Peter Neudorf, one of the participants, told the Post much of the land looked good for farming, but there was a shortage of tillers and other agricultural implements.
“In conversations, we were repeatedly assured that Mennonite immigrants would be helped to achieve certain rights or freedoms,” he said. “. . . Machines are rarely seen in the country, but as we were assured, importing is very easy and is supported by the authorities.”
Still, Neudorf said the prospect of founding an entire colony seemed difficult, but a smaller community could be started with the intention of testing over a few years whether a larger settlement would be possible.
The Paraguayan group also visited local Mennonites in Kinshasa, where Neudorf said they received a warm welcome.
