Jonathan proviene de una larga línea de menonitas por parte de su padre y de una prominente familia cristiana palestina por parte de su madre. Creció asistiendo a la Iglesia Menonita de Lima en Ohio. Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, participó en el programa Radical Journey de Mennonite Mission Network en Irlanda del Norte antes de asistir a la Universidad de Huntington, donde estudió Historia y Filosofía. Luego trabajó con Christian/Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) Proyecto Palestino en Hebrón, donde construyeron alianzas con pacificadores palestinos e israelíes para transformar la violencia y la opresión. Jonathan fue becario de Rotary pro Paz y estudió en la Universidad de Chulalongkorn en Bangkok, Tailandia, y tiene una maestría en Estudios Internacionales para la Paz en el Instituto Kroc de Notre Dame. Ese programa incluyó una pasantía de seis meses con Ndifuna Ukwazi en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, una organización que aboga por políticas de tierras más justas. En 2017, participó en el programa de Servicio Voluntario Menonita, como voluntario con MC USA para facilitar la redacción, aprobación e implementación de la Resolución Buscando la Paz en Israel y Palestina. In this penultimate episode of our series on Conflict and War, Palestinian/American Jonathan Brenneman shares on the history of the conflict in Palestine and the witness of the Palestinian Christian church to the world.

Jonathan comes from a long line of Mennonites on his father’s side and a prominent Palestinian Christian family on his mother’s side. He grew up attending Lima Mennonite Church. After graduating high school he participated in the Mennonite Mission Network’s Radical Journey program in Northern Ireland before attending Huntington University, where he studied History and Philosophy. He then worked with Christian/Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) Palestine Project in Hebron, where they built partnerships with Palestinian and Israeli peacemakers to transform violence and oppression. Jonathan was a Rotary Peace Fellow studying at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok Thailand and holds a master’s degree in International Peace Studies at Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute. That program included a six-month internship with Ndifuna Ukwazi in Cape Town South Africa, an organization which advocates for more just land policies. In 2017, he participated in the Mennonite Voluntary Service program, volunteering with MC USA to facilitate the writing, passing, and implementation of the Seeking Peace in Israel and Palestine Resolution. He went on to work with Friends of Sabeel North America, promoting Palestinian Liberation theology, and Eyewitness Palestine, promoting responsible travel to Palestine. He currently resides in Syracuse New York, where he continues to advocate for peace, justice, and equality for everyone living in Historic Palestine.

En colaboración con el Director Adjunto de la Campaña Forestal, Raphael administra el Programa de África en la Agencia de Investigación Ambiental de Washington DC y supervisa los preparativos y la implementación de proyectos en la República Democrática del Congo, Nigeria, Gabón, Camerún y la República del Congo para abordar la tala ilegal. Trabaja en estrecha colaboración con las autoridades de gestión de CITES de África Occidental y en estrategias de reforma con gobiernos, organizaciones de la sociedad civil y redacta documentos relacionados con políticas, cultiva y mantiene relaciones con funcionarios gubernamentales, representantes de industrias.

Antes de unirse a EIA, en 2021, se desempeñó como teniente de alcalde de la ciudad de Cotonou (Benin), a cargo de la Acción y Asociación por el Clima Local, y lideró el Ministerio de Cambio Climático y Bosques, así como el Ministerio de la Tierra. Uso y Gobernanza Local. También se desempeñó como Director Ejecutivo de la ONG Bethesda en Benin durante 7 años y Director del Departamento de Medio Ambiente durante 11 años, donde coordinó la red nacional de 250 organizaciones de la sociedad civil en medio ambiente, saneamiento y gestión de desechos. Raphael implementó proyectos apoyados por el Banco Mundial y el Gobierno de Benin. La Red de Desarrollo Global y el gobierno japonés le otorgaron el premio Top Japanese Award por los proyectos de desarrollo más innovadores en 2007 en Beijing. Edou es ex alumno del Programa de Liderazgo para Visitantes Internacionales (Departamento de Estado de EE. UU.). Tiene una Maestría en Agricultura en Benin y en Administración de Empresas en la Quantic School of Business and Technology Washington DC.

We continue with our series of conversations focusing on conflicts in different parts of the world. In this interview Raphael Edou shares about the history of Benin and conflicts in the West African area.

In collaboration with the Deputy Director of the Forest Campaign, Raphael manages the Africa Program at the Environmental Investigation Agency Washington DC , and monitors preparations and implementations of projects in DRC, Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroun, and the Republic of Congo to tackle illegal logging. He works closely with the CITES management authorities of West Africa, and on reform strategies with governments, civil society organizations, and drafts policies-related documents, cultivates and maintains relationships with government officials, industries representatives.

Before joining EIA, in 2021, he was acting as the Deputy Mayor of the city of Cotonou (Benin), in charge of the Local Climate Action and Partnership, and led the Ministry of Climate Change and Forest as well as the Ministry of the Land Use and Local Governance. He also served as the Executive Director of Bethesda NGO in Benin for 7 years and Director of the Environment Department for 11 years, where he coordinated the national network of 250 civil society organizations in the environment, sanitation, and waste management. Raphael implemented projects supported by the World Bank and the Government of Benin. He has been awarded the Top Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Projects in 2007 in Beijing by the Global Development Network and the Japanese Government. Edou is an alumni of the International Visitor Leadership Program (US Department of State). He has a Master’s degree in Agriculture in Benin and in Business Administration at the Quantic School of Business and Technology Washington DC.
