The idea of triune God

While I agree with Jim Brenneman’s criticism of Nicaea (“Back to the Future: Mennonites in 2525,” January), I also think John Rempel (Letters, March) makes a valid point that the Nicene Creed has a part to play in our tradition. But Rempel goes too far when he says the idea of a three-in-one God is a conclusion of the biblical authors. It most decidedly is not. While it may be theologically defensible (as are a variety of nontrinitarian christologies), it represents the thought of a later age and not of the New Testament writers.
