What about war?

The article on Choice Books (“100,000,000 Books,” Feb. 16) notes that Choice Books displays are in the Pentagon shopping area and in Army & Air Force Exchange Service stores. One book on the Choice Books rack in the Washington, D.C., Union Station is Stephen Leston’s Illustrated Guide to Bible Battles. It may be a best-seller at the Pentagon. According to Leston, “The Bible tells the story of faithful Abraham leading a righteous war.” Of battles in the Book of Revelation, Leston says, “these passages refer to future, literal conflicts.” Letters to MWR have focused on Leviticus purity codes. Few seem concerned about a military god, our wars in Iraq and Syria, our violent drone attacks or war taxes for the Pentagon’s “killion”-dollar budget. Perhaps that is why the Mennonite church is referred to as a “historic” peace church.
