Human cost of aid cuts

In response to “Am I Wrong About Trump?” (Letters, January), which speculated that most USAID money is wasted: The Center for Global Development and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health have measured the positive impact of USAID-funded programs. They estimate that in 2025 the cuts caused between 500,000 and 1 million deaths. In future years they estimate 670,000 to 1.6 million lives will be lost per year, totaling possibly 23 million additional deaths by 2030. These are deaths that President Trump is causing in our name by refusing to use 0.3% of the federal budget to continue providing food, clean water, health care, shelter and disaster relief to the neediest around the world. This is immoral, un-American and un-Christian. It is good to support humanitarian aid through faith-based organizations like Mennonite Central Committee. But the federal government, through our taxes, has resources to make a much bigger impact.
