David Rensberger asks: Where in the New Testament is Jesus described as anyone’s personal Savior? (“MC USA’s Biblical Evangelism,” April 9). The theme of the entire New Testament is the need to receive Jesus as personal Savior and Lord. Paul had no trouble claiming Jesus as his personal Savior. In Acts 13:39, Paul claims that through faith in Jesus everyone who believes is set free from sin. Paul experienced this forgiveness and personal salvation in a dramatic way. In Acts 2, Peter implored everyone listening to turn from their sin. John wrote that all who received Jesus would become children of God (John 1:12). The problem with diluting the need for personal salvation is that we also dilute the acknowledgement of our sinful condition. Paul and Peter were effective followers of Jesus because they experienced the forgiveness of Jesus. We need a renewed emphasis on a personal relationship with Christ and personal salvation to be effective followers. We cannot imitate one we do not personally know.
