Adam Dirks and Bethany Hamilton finished in third place on CBS’s The Amazing Race reality television competition. The final episode aired Dec. 19.

Dirks is a member of Park View Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro, Kan., and a 2011 graduate of Tabor College.
Hamilton is a professional surfer and motivational speaker from Priceville, Hawaii. Her story of losing an arm in a shark attack was portrayed in the film Soul Surfer.
The married couple finished consistently near the top during each of the 26,000-mile contest’s stages and were in second place before the finale. The winners received a $1 million grand prize.
Dirks and Hamilton were in the lead through much of the final stage’s challenges, which included jumping out of a Los Angeles building and swimming to rescue a 200-pound dummy. But they later slipped during a memory challenge.
