Thank you for John Longhurst’s articles on pastoral misconduct in Mennonite Church Eastern Canada (Aug. 27). The stories, though, lacked analysis. There is an assumption that the church is competent to judge. Could it be that the reason there are so many convictions in the Waterloo, Ont., region is that MCEC is willing to forgo well-established principles of justice in which the accused is able to defend against the claims? I wish Longhurst had interviewed lawyers who are highly disturbed by the form of justice used in MCEC.
