Mennonite Evangelical Church in Seminole, Texas, is hosting the funerals of the father and son who died when their truck struck a van and caused a March 15 crash near Andrews, Texas, that killed nine people, including members of a New Mexico college golf team.

NBC News reported Henrich Siemens, 38, was the father of a 13-year-old who was driving the truck when a spare tire failed, likely causing the truck to swerve and cross the median into the path of a van carrying members of the men’s and women’s golf teams of University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M.

Six students and their coach died in the crash, including one student from Portugal and one from Mexico. Two students from Canada were taken to a Lubbock hospital and were stable as of March 17.

The church’s pastor, Jake Fehr, told NBC News he knew Siemens growing up, and the two funerals will be held March 22 and 23 at the church because it is larger than the one they attended, South Seminole Baptist Church.

Fehr also confirmed the family encountered tragedy late last year.

“The whole house burned down,” he said. “They lost everything in that home.”

The Associated Press reported Department of Public Safety sergeant Victor Taylor said a 13-year-old at the wheel would be against the law. Texas law requires drivers to be 15 years old to receive a provisional license to drive with a licensed adult.

A rural community of conservative Mennonites is located in the Seminole area.

The golf team had been scheduled to take part in the Tabor College Spring Invite tournament March 21-22, as well as the Bethel Invitational tournament April 2-3.
