Photos from Colorado and Wild Geese

posted by Tim Nafziger on 08/25/08 at 12:22 AM

Last night I returned from a week long vacation in Colorado. It was my first immersion in the wonderful scenery of the Rocky mountains and foothills. I took lots of photos. I’ll share a few of them here accompanied by the text from one of my favorite poems of all time.

Wild Geese

by Mary Oliver

Stream on the path to Hangling lake by you.

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

For a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

PICT9641 by you.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

PICT9611 by you.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Flooded field in Gulfport, Illinois by you.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

PICT9509 by you.

over the prairies and the deep trees,

PICT9713 by you.

the mountains and the rivers.

PICT9665 by you.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

PICT9712 by you.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

PICT9310 by you.

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting-

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

PICT9954 by you.
If you enjoyed Wild Geese, read more about Mary Oliver on Wikipedia and buy (or borrow) one of her many collections of poetry.
