#GivingTuesday, an alternative day of giving meant to counteract all the consumer spending on days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is tomorrow, Nov. 29.This day is important to The Mennonite, Inc. as we work to continue our ministry of bringing you Christ-centered, current Anabaptist content each and every day.
Here are four good reasons (although certainly there could be many more) to support The Mennonite, Inc. by making a donation or purchasing a subscription tomorrow.
1. In 2016 alone, we will reach 850,000 people with Anabaptist-Mennonite content.
You read that right. This year alone, we’ve provided hundreds of free news stories, blogs, feature articles, playlists, recipes and more to people across the church and beyond. We are a key part in helping to tell a story—both within the church and beyond—about what it means to be an Anabaptist follower of Jesus in 2016.
2. Because TMail is a prime source for breaking news across the church, and its FREE.
If you receive our invitation to give tomorrow, that means you’re a subscriber to TMail, our free weekly e-newsletter that gives you a roundup of the news and opinions shaping the church each week. We are only able to provide this free resource due to the generosity of donors and supporters.
3. Because church journalism helps to encourage the church and also hold it accountable.
If you’ve been following secular news sources lately, you might have seen that there is widespread concern about the sustainability of journalism. Good reporting—reporting that follows many leads, conducts widespread interviews, searches for responsible documentation and tries to tell a robust, multi-faceted story—takes staff time, expertise and resources. Church journalism is no different.
The stories our staff tell—and the voices we solicit to write—help to encourage the church and highlight the ways God’s spirit is at work. We also help to hold the church accountable to transparency and to report on processes and news that all members of the church should be aware of as we seek to live into our vision of church as a priesthood of all believers.
4. Because no content is really free.
I get it. I’m actually a Millennial (albeit an older one). We are not trained to pay for content. We’re used to accessing everything for free. Or maybe you’re one of those folks who likes to share your copy of The Mennonite magazine or read it at the office. It’s not that these things are bad. But the truth is, all good content takes staff time and resources to produce.
But when you subscribe or donate, it’s a vote to keep this important ministry and publication going. If you’re already a subscriber, consider giving the gift of The Mennonite this Christmas.
On #GivingTuesday, gifts up to $2,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. Please consider making a gift of $25 or more (less than $0.50 per issue of TMail you’ve received this year) to support this ministry.
