As this issue goes to press, the devastation from the fires in California weighs heavily on our hearts. You can find a report on page 22 about the Anabaptist communities affected and ongoing response. If you have time, talents or resources to offer in support of their recovery, Mennonite Disaster Service and Pacific Southwest Mennonite Conference are working directly for relief efforts.
Following our special “500 Years of Anabaptism” issue in January, this month we offer feature articles on a variety of topics. I’d like to draw your attention to “Farming with Hickories Is an Act of Faith” by Sierra Ross Richer on page 14. Sierra is a graduate of Goshen College, a journalist, farmer and Anabaptist World contributor. This year she will be writing a series called “Climate Stewards,” exploring ways that individuals or communities are working to care for the Earth, in ways big and small, to mitigate global climate change.
We hope the series inspires hope and action as we see what others are doing and imagine what might be possible with our own hands in our own communities.
Finally, a friendly reminder: February is Black History Month in the United States and Canada. Let’s take advantage of opportunities to learn about, commemorate and celebrate our Black sisters and brothers. One concrete action is to support Black-owned businesses in our communities.
