Opera workshop stretches creativity and stage skills

WINNIPEG, Man. — Ashley Fredette wants to perform in operas one day, but it wasn’t until she took Canadian Mennonite University’s Opera Workshop course that she got her first taste of what life as an opera singer entails.

Fredette, a CMU music student, took Opera Workshop this school year. Participants study selections from operatic literature during the fall term and then perform them over the course of three or four nights at the beginning of the winter term.

Prison theater project reveals ‘freedom behind bars’

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Bethel College student Emily Simpson’s time in prison taught her more than she’d imagined.

It might not be what you think. Simpson, nine other Bethel students and their professor, director of theater John McCabe-Juhnke, spent several dozen hours behind the razor wire, heavy stone walls and locked doors of Hutchinson Correctional Facility during Bethel’s January interterm.
