Russel Abner Yoder

Russel Abner Yoder, 87, of Kansas City, died March 22, 2026, after a brief hospitalization. He was born in Harper, Kan., and spent his early childhood in Crystal Springs. His family moved frequently as his father continued his education and ministered for several Mennonite churches. A longtime member of Rainbow Mennonite Church in Kansas City, he was beloved by his church community, family and friends.

Russel graduated from Hesston Academy in 1957 and attended Hesston College for two years. He continued his studies at Bethel College and completed his senior year at Goshen College, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After marrying his wife, Charlene, in 1966 and having their first two children, he earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He spent his career helping others, first as a social worker and later as a vocational counselor.

Russel enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, books and newspaper articles to preserve history. He served on the board of the Balmer Fund, helping to save historic buildings. He loved writing and had letters to the editor published in various newspapers. He enjoyed writing poetry, even winning a few local contests. He loved music and appreciated the hymnal Voices Together. His favorite musician was his daughter Kristina, who performs with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene (Goer­ing) Yoder; children Russ (Kristin), Dawn and Kris­tina; five grandchildren; and siblings ImoJeanne Johnson, Galen Yoder and Bonita Yoder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gideon and Stella Yoder; and brother John Yoder.
