Talking science and faith

The editorial on the life and thought of astronomer Owen Gingerich (July 7) prompted memories of the Mennonite Congregation of Boston. During my postdoctoral studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, my wife, Lois, and I transferred our church memberships there. With members like Owen Gingerich, Gordon Kaufman, J. Lawrence Burkholder and other Harvard University Divinity School students and faculty, we had lively discussions about faith, science and religion. We referred to ourselves as “Old Generals,” as we were one of the joint “Old” Mennonite and General Conference groups, predating later mergers.
