The beginning, not the end

Amen to Paul Schrag’s editorial (“Merely a symbol?,” July 9). No matter the when, how, where or why of our physical baptism, it is in remembering that we are truly cleansed by our baptism for a real infusion of the Spirit’s life-giving power.

As my pastor wisely counseled me as an anxious teen, “Baptism is not the end. It is the beginning.” Membership in Christ’s body is a shared remembering of God’s transforming work of love, peace and kindness.

More than a symbol . . . in . . . deed!
