I attended the Mennonite Church USA convention as a “Pink Menno Grandmother,” wearing my self-made badge. I felt welcomed by so many people, including LGBT folks, their families and other supporters of inclusion. I will never forget the hugs and smiles and the beautiful music sung by Pink Mennos, joined by many others outside the delegate hall. I was encouraged by the forbearance resolution but puzzled by the Membership Guidelines resolution, which appeared to send an opposite message. Perhaps churches can choose whichever they wish.
Sunday’s worship service began with celebration and comments about our wonderful week. I wept as I imagined how this rejoicing must feel to an LGBTQ follower of Christ hoping to be welcomed into the church but denied a voice. Then Shane Claiborne spoke of marginalized people who need to be included, including LGBTQ folks. I’m glad he spoke for those who have no voice.
