Six people were killed Aug. 12 in Michigan when a truck went through a stop sign and hit a van carrying members of an Amish community to a funeral.

The Detroit Free Press reported five of the people killed near Bay City were Amish adults, four women and one man.

The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office said 10 people were traveling in the van and three in the truck, with multiple passengers ejected from the vehicles. One man from the truck also died.

Undersheriff Robert Baxter told the Associated Press seven people were taken to the hospital.

The AP reported a 4-month-old girl died after a crash the same day in Western Michigan that involved a truck and an Amish buggy. State police said there were four other children and two adults in the buggy. A 2-year-old boy was in critical condition.

“This tragic crash is a sobering reminder to drive with patience and caution in areas where horse-and-buggy travel is a way of life,” police said.

A few days earlier, the Free Press reported six people were injured, four seriously and one critically, on Aug. 9 near Kalamazoo when an SUV struck their horse-drawn buggy from behind. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office reported the driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
