The last Confession of Faith was written to support the unity of the church (“Binational Leaders Agree Not to Pursue a New Confession” (page 37). Well, that didn’t work. What would be the purpose of the next one? A pastor from a church thinking of joining Mennonite Church USA asked me about the Confession. I told her to read Voices Together. We sing our theology.

Our Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective is a generation or two outdated. It is no longer a statement of what most of us more or less agree on.

When filling out the Ministerial Leadership Information form to be an MC USA pastor, you have to write about three articles in the Confession you agree with and three you disagree with. That feels healthier than the fantasy of a perfect Confession.
