Professional chefs feed flood victims in Houston

Mercy Chefs, a Virginia based non-profit disaster relief organization has deployed their team of professional chefs to feed victims of the latest round of extreme flooding in Houston, Texas.

America’s fourth largest city did not have time to recover from April’s flood damage before a torrential downpour – twenty-one inches of rain in two days – triggered another round of severe flooding across the area. Current forecasts are predicting an additional ten inches of rainfall over the next two days. Thousands of residents are already under mandatory evacuation.

The Texas Department of Emergency Management requested Mercy Chefs’ immediate assistance in bringing relief to southeast Houston. Mercy Chefs serves on the Texas Emergency Feeding Task Force and is one of only five agencies permitted to enter the disaster zone at this point. The organization’s mobile response unit will be stationed in Brazoria County and is capable of providing its own power and potable water.

This is the third chef deployment to Texas in 2016. In a Facebook post, the organization noted that their resources are stretched thin and they are actively recruiting more professional chefs to volunteer and join the efforts.
