As you list the hopes of Anabaptist World (Sept. 25), four things stand out: to belong, be accountable, be Anabaptist and be independent. The desire to be independent seems like a fish out of water. Belonging and accountability presuppose interdependence with someone. Editor Paul Schrag suggests this someone is “the people, not any denomination.” Fair enough, but this doesn’t mean AW is independent. The attempt to base independence within Anabaptism falls flat. “Anabaptism is not a church” declares Schrag. I don’t know what that means. Anabaptism without the church is not Anabaptist.
