Alvin Ray Graber

Alvin Ray Graber, 95, of Nappanee, Ind., died Feb. 5, 2026. He was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Rolette, N.D., the oldest child of Amos and Magdalena (Gingerich) Graber. He joined the Amish church as a teenager in Etna Green, Ind., and transferred to the Mennonite church at age 22, currently College Mennonite Church in Goshen, Ind.

He served in 1-W alternative service during the Korean War and graduated from Goshen College in 1958 and the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1963. He married Dolores Nadine Kauffman on July 4, 1959, in Pennsylvania. After an internship in South Bend, Ind., and two years at the Mennonite hospital in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, he joined Nappanee Family Medical Clinic. He was a well-loved community family doctor who responded to patients after hours for urgent care in the clinic or at home with his well-stocked black bag. He delivered over 3,000 babies at Elkhart Hospital, occasionally in an emergency in the office and once in his own car. He considered his patients’ physical and spiritual well-being first, prioritizing quality health care over payment or proper paperwork. He was a lifelong learner with interests in Bible study, theology, psychology, nutrition and preventative medicine. He started violin lessons at age 75. He loved working on his farm, running-walking, flying airplanes, fixing things and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife and their children, Dr. Starla (Dr. Harley Yoder) Graber of Elkhart, Ind., Dr. Kevin (Dr. Jennifer) Graber of Los Gatos, Calif., Susan (Gavin Schubert) Graber of Nappanee and Melodie (Jimmy Orjala) Graber of Downers Grove, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and siblings Betty Nissley, John (Charlotte) Graber, Eunice (Floyd) Martin, Lucy Kaufman and Anna (Gene) Hochstetler. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Maust; and a brother, Toby Graber.
