It’s time for a new hymnal

The time is near for the next generation’s hymnal. Scheduled for release in 2020, it will be more than a printed book.

Representatives from MennoMedia, Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA laid the foundation for a new song collection at an April meeting in Minneapolis.

The collection will include an electronic version as well as other supporting products.

The new volume will replace the 1992 Hymnal: A Worship Book, which succeeded the 1969 Mennonite Hymnal.

Goshen, Ind., confronts its sundown town past

When Dan Shenk began researching the sundown town history of his city, Goshen, Ind., he was surprised how much information he found.

He read about it in sociologist James Loewen’s book, Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism. The book defines a sundown town as “any organized jurisdiction that for decades kept African Americans or other groups from living in it.”

Goshen is home to a large Anabaptist population and many Mennonite . . .

With a name and leaders, Evana group moves ahead

Evana Network will be the name of a new Anabaptist group of churches set to launch in September.

Congregations that join Evana can continue to be part of Mennonite Church USA or any other group.

“We do not seek to prevent congregations from having other . . .

MC USA board sends ‘forbearance’ resolution to delegates

“Forbearance” is the key word of a resolution the Mennonite Church USA Executive Board will send to convention delegates in July.

Meeting April 6-8 in Kansas City, Mo., the board approved the resolution — along with three others and one that’s still being worked on — for delegates’ consideration.

“We think it has the potential to help us live together with our disagreements,” said Ervin Stutzman, MC USA executive director, in a telephone interview after the meeting.

Hesston expands nursing program to bachelor’s degree

HESSTON, Kan. — Hesston College received approval from the Kansas State Board of Nursing March 25 to launch a bachelor of science in nursing program starting with the 2015-16 year.

The introduction of the program to the existing associate degree program will make Hesston the only college or university in Kansas where students may choose to pursue either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing.

“The expansion of degree options in this program is a natural growth opportunity,” said vice president of academics Brent Yoder.
