Isn’t it deceptive?

Regarding “Illinois Pastors Allowed to Officiate Same-Sex Marriages” (March 9): I realized a couple weeks ago that the writer of our current Adult Bible Study by MennoMedia, which our Sunday school class uses, [is one of the women who were married in the wedding that led to the Illinois Mennonite Conference action]. It may be that the writer, Laura Brenneman, was not in a relationship when she wrote and submitted the manuscript. But isn’t it deceptive and unfair to the readers that she is in a lesbian relationship while her material is being used? God only knows how many readers may have been deceived.

Amy Gingerich, publisher and executive director of MennoMedia, responds: We are always looking for a balance of women, men and people of color to write our quarterly Adult Bible Study. Not all of our writers carry a ministerial credential. Laura Brenneman was invited because of her academic background and hermeneutical approach. We contracted with her to write the spring 2020 quarter three years ago. Her ministerial credential was then and remains in good standing with Illinois and Central District conferences of Mennonite Church USA. She is a skilled writer, and it’s my hope that readers will encounter God more deeply through her insights.
