MCC responds with food, shelter, supplies in Nepal

Mennonite Central Committee will begin its Nepal earthquake response by working with a local organization in the remote, eastern area of the country, providing food and other essential items to affected families.

Support for about 200 families in Okhaldhunga District will assist people whose homes are no longer safe for use and who have less than one week of food available. Priority will be given to female-led households, and households . . .

Rare Russian Mennonite photos to see new life

A collection of photos depicting Mennonite life in Southern Russia (present-day Ukraine) at the turn of the 20th century — a pinnacle quickly wiped out by the Bolshevik Revolution — should find its way back to the printed page early next year.

John Rempel of Toronto and Lauren Friesen of Chicago are working to produce a reprint of Forever Summer, Forever Sunday, featuring 93 photographs by Rempel’s grandfather, Peter Gerhard Rempel.

Vietnamese pastor severely beaten

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — Nguyen Hong Quang, leader of the unregistered Vietnam Evangelical Mennonite Church, was severely beaten on his way to evening worship Jan. 18.

A few minutes after leaving his home with another pastor, Huynh Thuc Khai, each on his own motorcycle, they were accosted by two men who knocked Khai from his motorcycle.

Quang, who was following, stopped to assist the younger pastor. The two assailants signaled five other men, who assaulted Quang with clubs and bricks.

Year after typhoon, MCC still rebuilding in Philippines

One year after Typhoon Haiyan destroyed the house of Dominga Arias in the Philippines, the 50-year-old widow and mother of three has a new home with a more spacious bedroom than before.

The simple wood structure with a tin roof was built by combining wood from her old house with a shelter kit of new wood, tin roofing, rebar and building supplies provided by Mennonite Central Committee through Church World Service and its partners.
