Canned meat provides drought relief

Central America faced its worst drought in 40 years last summer when an El Niño weather pattern hit. The dry spell affected the first growing season between May and August, causing widespread crop loss.

To help farmers make it through to the second growing season, Mennonite Central Committee provided emergency food assistance to 1,666 families. That included a distribution of 30,384 cans of meat in El Salvador, Honduras . . .

MCC flooding response unites former enemies

When Cornelius and Shauna Frantz of Pittsburgh came to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2013, they expected to work with people who had experienced trauma during the country’s 1990s civil war. They didn’t expect a new traumatic event would help unite people across longtime ethnic and religious divides.

2014 started with a mild winter and early spring. Precipitation that would have fallen during a typical winter came all at once in May, bringing three months’ worth of rain in just three days.

Planting opportunity, rebuilding lives

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Breezes flutter the sheer fabric hanging in the doorway of Gladys Joseph’s new home in Cabaret, 24 miles outside Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince. There’s room in the yard for her children to play. And, for the first time since she was sent to Haiti’s capital city as a child, she’s able to have a garden — corn, beans, manioc and okra.

Five years after a devastating earthquake tore across Port-au-Prince . . .

MCC responds to needs of displaced in Ukraine

WINNIPEG, Man. — As people in Ukraine continue to be forced from their homes by violence, Mennonite Central Committee is asking for donations to support its work with church partners that are responding to the needs of displaced people.

Violence and armed conflicts have forced hundreds of thousands of people to seek safety in neighboring countries and within Ukraine. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and wounded.

“Every person has to decide how to respond,” said . . .
