Nobel Laureate urges EMU graduates to take action

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee called 467 members of Eastern Mennonite University’s graduating class to take action in the present rather than be paralyzed by uncertainty about their future.

“Begin with what you have,” she said April 27, using “your little gift to change the world.”

Gbowee referred with pride in her commencement speech to being a graduate of EMU . . .

Florida school becomes part of a Global Family

SARASOTA, Fla. — No more water bottles in class, Bible teacher Don Fry told the 10th-graders in his classroom at Sarasota Christian School.

Looking confused, students pulled water bottles from their backpacks and put them on the table.

School administrators, Fry said, had decided water bottles were too disruptive. From now on students could use the water fountain in the gym between classes and drink at lunch.

Russian scholar uncovers Soviet-era history

FRESNO, Calif. — The Mennonite experience in the former Soviet Union is more than family history — it is a way to understand the relationship between a state and its people.

This was one of the themes of “Mennonites in the Soviet Union,” a series of lectures March 27 and 29 at Fresno Pacific University. The speaker was Andrej Savin, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Bibles for Bolivians, to read or to listen

WINNIPEG, Man. — Norman Brown’s goal is to distribute the Plautdietsch (Low German) Bible free to every home in Bolivia where the language is spoken. Since Mennonite Brethren publisher Kindred Productions released De Bibel in 2003, the Winnipegger has handed out more than 8,000 copies.

Brown began ministering to Plautdietsch speakers in 1994 when Power to Change (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) placed him in charge of the newly translated Low German Jesus film.

Beachy Amish define beliefs

YODER, Kan. — Beachy Amish Mennonite ministers adopted the group’s first statement of faith at their national meetings April 9-11.

Outgoing bishops committee chair David Yoder of Partridge said the multiyear drafting process was initiated to define what the Beachy Amish believe.

“A number of years ago, there was a conservative element that began asking questions: ‘Are others in our constituency no longer doing our practices? Do they belong in the constituency?’ ” he said. “We’ve taken a journey to find who we really are. We’re asking what defines us, what makes us significantly different from other conservative Anabaptist groups.”
