A season of hope and transition

In a season of celebration, this issue’s cover expresses sorrow but also hope for peace in the face of a child. As our writer, William O’Brien, says in the article “Rachel’s Tears”: “This, too, is Christmas.”

As 2024 approaches, I’m thinking about what the new year holds. Yes, there will be a U.S. presidential election, but I would rather talk about something fun: the Summer Olympics in Paris. Four new sports will debut: breaking (dancing), skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing. Our oldest child likes to fancy himself a dancer, so it will be fun to hear what he thinks about the breaking competitors.

For Anabaptist World in 2024, I’m eager to see how our theme issues will come together. Our editors have several ideas I’m particularly excited about. The first one, planned for February, is “When I met Jesus.” Later we hope to have themes on biblical interpretation, mental health, science and faith, and more. Look for submission calls in print and online.

I’m also eager to move into a new phase for our organization. Since our beginning in 2020, we have had a lot of transition. We’ve learned new systems of working, hired new staff, launched our membership program, and more.

Now firmly established, we hope to focus on refining and growing our work and supporters. There is always more to be done, and we are fortunate to have wonderful people surrounding us as we do it.

Thank you for all the ways you have supported Anabaptist World this year. If you haven’t yet, please consider a donation to our matching-gift campaign. A generous supporter has pledged a match of up to $25,000, so your gift will double in value. You can send a check to Anabaptist World, 129 W. Sixth St., Newton KS 67114 or give online at anabaptistworld.org/Double2023. This will help us end 2023 well and start 2024 strong.

Many blessings to you as you reflect on 2023 and look forward to the new year. We are grateful that you are joining us on the journey.
