I believe the genius of the birth of Anabaptism resulted from the realization that a person’s relationship with God is not appropriately mediated by an institution. I fear that in the succeeding 500 years we have become them. Do we forget that Jesus welcomed the centurion, the tax collector and the prostitute? Any “confession of faith” that goes beyond “I know God and seek to follow Jesus” is a step into hubris. Why do we continue to bow down to Constantine?
