Mennonites say no to war taxes: Mennonites say no to war taxes

April 15 is tax day in the United States. But while most people pay their taxes by that date, a group of us at Community Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg, Va., take a different route. Concerned with the high percentage of our federal tax money that goes to the military while we pray for peace, we witness to our Christian faith through how we deal with this dilemma …

Publishers adapt to a changing market

In December, megachurch pastor Bill Hybels preached a sermon introducing the peace framework from John Paul Lederach’s book The Journey Toward Reconciliation to his congregation of more than 24,000 people.

Hybels is the senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill.

His recommendation sparked renewed interest in Lederach’s 1999 Herald Press book, said Russ Eanes, director of MennoMedia.

Relentless love

Memorial Day was established to remember those who served and died in the armed forces. For many people, it’s a time for picnics and cookouts or just a nice day off from work. But for some, Memorial Day is anything but a nice day. If you have a loved one who died in war because of their military service, it may be a time of sadness and grief. It’s not just a day to honor veterans of long-ago wars. People today are mourning loved ones who died in the more recent wars of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Marcus Smucker: Pastor, teacher, spiritual director

Florida school becomes part of a Global Family

SARASOTA, Fla. — No more water bottles in class, Bible teacher Don Fry told the 10th-graders in his classroom at Sarasota Christian School.

Looking confused, students pulled water bottles from their backpacks and put them on the table.

School administrators, Fry said, had decided water bottles were too disruptive. From now on students could use the water fountain in the gym between classes and drink at lunch.
