Like many Americans, I am appalled at President Trump’s second term. I’ve been asking, “What does the resistance look like?” and “How do I join it?” As I imagine that, I see the image of a lone, unarmed Chinese man standing fearlessly in front of a tank moving through Tiananmen Square.
On Feb. 8, I joined the resistance when I marched in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors through the center of town to Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where we paused to reflect. The next morning, a Sunday, we sang the great African American liberation anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Later that day, I heard it again before the Super Bowl. I sensed a theme emerging, perhaps even the Holy Spirit’s prodding.
During the protest march, I saw a sign quoting “First They Came” by Martin Niemöller: “First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.” They have already come for our neighbors. I urge you to find the resistance and join it!
