M. Willis Sutter, 95, died April 16, 2025, at Snyder Village, Metamora, Ill. He was born in Hopedale, Ill., on May 17, 1929. His parents were Levi S. and Alma Nafziger Sutter.
He graduated from Hopedale High School in 1947. He attended Goshen College until he began dental school at Northwestern University. He received the D.D.S. degree from Northwestern Dental School in 1953. He married Esther E. Eigsti on April 6, 1957. She died June 19, 2017. She joined him in the dental practice until retirement.
His community activities included: president of the Rantoul Rotary Club, chair of the Rantoul Planning Commission and president of the Illini District Dental Society.
He was baptized at Hopedale Mennonite Church, where he was member until moving to Rantoul, Ill., and becoming a member of East Bend Mennonite Church in Fisher, Ill. He transferred to Metamora Mennonite Church after retiring and moved to Eureka, Ill. At both East Bend and Metamora, he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was an elder in both congregations and served as a delegate to Illinois Mennonite Conference and the Mennonite Church General Assembly.
He was president of Illinois Mennonite Conference from 1998 to 2000. From 1994 to 2002 he and Esther served in voluntary assignments for Ten Thousand Villages in Akron, Pa., Montreat, N.C., and Myrtle Beach, S.C. He volunteered at the Open Arms Food Pantry, Et Cetera Shop and in various capacities at Maple Lawn Homes.
His brother, Earl Sutter, survives. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Ina Sutter, Edna Springer, Oleeda Albrecht, Lela Sutter, Miriam Albrecht, Alice Wenger and Jean King; and brothers Vernal Sutter and Dennis Sutter.
