Why should an Anabaptist periodical take sides in the political process (“Evangelical writers: Trump is a ‘spiritual danger,’ ” MWR, July 13)? The apostles Paul and Peter wrote most of our New Testament during the ruthless regime of Emperor Nero. What would the church be like today if they had written epistles on “Nero is a spiritual danger”? Instead, they instructed believers to be submissive, to honor and pray for those in civil authority. Why join the president bashers? Having survived under 14 presidents and listened to many hours of criticism of them, I have concluded such energy would be better spent promoting the kingdom of God. I have never voted but place confidence in the words of the prophet Daniel, who said God “deposes kings and sets up kings” (Daniel 2:21). Perhaps our time is better spent in the prayer closet than at the polls.
