I take exception to the premise that “elbows up” is an offensive maneuver (“Elbows Up! Is That Anabaptist?,” May). It is at least equally a defensive move, especially in response to the bullying tactics of an opponent who possesses, in its own mind at least, superiority based on size and demeanor. I agree that many Canadian reactions to the United States, such as booing its national anthem at sporting events, are quite “nonchristian” in character. We speak truth to power by defying the imbalance that exists. There can be no meaningful dialogue without mutual respect. Historically, Anabaptist-Mennonites withdrew from conflict situations by seeking other geographic locations in which to be “the quiet in the land.” Does that option even exist anymore? This has nothing to do with nationalistic jingoism dressed up as patriotism. It’s about supporting our neighbors in responding to oppression.
