In July, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents killed three people during arrests. Here in Florida, there is an ICE push against Haitians. Haitians were previously welcomed into our country, protected by Temporary Protected Status. The Trump administration abruptly canceled their TPS status and defined them as “illegal.” Fear is rampant in this community and in many others. I urge us to consider a biblically based amnesty policy to solve our immigration situation. In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act legalized 2.7 million immigrants. Among other results, the economy improved and the crime rate went down. Why not again? I ask you to consider our role as followers of Jesus. I am reminded of German pastor Martin Niemöller’s words, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. . . .” We are in similar times today.
