Goshen College students raise awareness of U.S.-Mexico border with gated security crossing on campus April 6-10.
Students in the Goshen (Ind.) College Social Reform Club created a mock border crossing using a chain-link fence on the college campus April 6-10 to represent the border crossing experience between the United States and Mexico.
Dividing campus at two major arteries, the gate includes students acting as security officers, asking other students to show I.D., empty water bottles and have their bags inspected before passing through.
In this photo, Erin Bergen, a first-year from North Newton, Kan., checks another student’s ID. In the background, Sarah Hofkamp, a sophomore from Peabody, Kansas, empties the water bottle of Caleb Longenecker, a senior from Grayslake, Ill., while Peter Wise, a sophomore from Lititz, Pa., looks on.
The aim of the wall is to raise awareness about what it’s like to cross the U.S.-Mexico border and to encourage discussion about immigration experiences.
