An Anabaptist convention playlist: For Orlando and beyond

Isaac Villegas is Pastor of Chapel Hill (North Carolina) Mennonite Fellowship.

In episode 2 of the Let’s Talk About Church podcast, Isaac Villegas mentioned that he was creating a playlist for the Mennonite Church USA convention in Orlando. He’s shared that podcast with us here. Happy listening!

The playlist starts with songs for this week as you pack and travel to Orlando: voices ranging from Ana Tijioux to Arcade Fire singing an invitation to convention.

Then the songs shift to an acknowledgement of our woundedness as a denomination and as a church, and our need to be honest with one another about what keeps us from loving each other–acknowledging all of our borders, as M.I.A. puts it.

Next the playlist moves into a grouping of songs that will encourage and sustain you in the middle of the week, in the midst of all the difficulties and excitements of discernment, especially during the Future Church Summit as we figure out who we are and who we want to be as Mennonites. Chance the Rapper is perfect for this, when he reminds us that we’re all we’ve got, as well as Aretha Franklin when she calls us to hold onto Jesus.

The last several songs bring our time to a close, reminding us to be grateful for the friendships that hold us together in Christ’s love. I hope there’s something for everyone on this playlist in terms of emotional range and musical style. See you all soon!
