Don’t blame the victim

Thanks to Conrad Kanagy for revealing his suffering caused by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (“Mental illness and toxic religion,” Feb. 10). We don’t blame people with cancer for getting sick, so why blame those with mental disorders for their disabilities? OCD may include repetitive, intrusive, alien thoughts (obsessions) or the need to engage in compulsive rituals. Medication and cognitive therapy are frequently beneficial, but recovery — rather than cure — may be the outcome. Our church community should support the healing process and not blame the victim.
