Fern Nadine (Krehbiel) Hohmann

Fern Nadine (Krehbiel) Hohmann, 92, formerly of Deer Creek, Okla., died Feb. 8, 2023 in Liberty, Mo. She was born on April 21, 1930, to Ben J. and Helen (Albright) Krehbiel of Pretty Prairie, Kan.

After high school, she graduated from Bethel Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Newton, Kan. She maintained friendships with classmates from nursing school for most of her life. She continued her education and earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Colorado in Boulder. During her nursing career, Fern was employed as a surgical nurse.

In 1955, she married Carl Hohmann at Pretty Prairie Mennonite Church. They made their home in Kansas during the early years of their marriage. In 1959, they moved to Deer Creek to run the family farm. Fern was focused on her family, serving in Deer Creek Mennonite Church and using her nursing knowledge and skills to aid her local community.

An accomplished pianist, she enjoyed music and was dedicated to ensuring that all her children learned to play the piano. Carl and Fern enjoyed traveling and took trips to see family, attend electric cooperative events and explore more local areas on road trips. They traveled to Norway to visit their daughter, who was living there. One memorable trip, later in her life, was visiting her sister Phyllis and her family in California.

While challenged with dementia and limited mobility, she still displayed her sense of humor and personality.

She is survived by her four children, Karla (Brian) Leuenberg, Max (Becky) Hohmann, Tresa Hohmann and Kyle (Nancy) Hohmann; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis (Krehbiel) Schmidt; and sister-in-law Florine (Hohmann) LeClerc.
