Peter Daniel Shetler, 65, technology director at Bethany Christian Schools in Goshen, Ind., died Sept. 26 after an accident in the school’s parking lot.
Shetler was a member of Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship, where he served in numerous positions, including on the leadership team and as a Stephen Minister, youth mentor and trustee. (See obituary on page 47.)
“He had a kind and gentle spirit and was generous with his time when it came to helping others,” said Berkey Avenue Pastor Mark Schloneger. “He will be deeply missed.”
Shetler had lived in eight countries around the world, including serving with his wife, Jan Bender Shetler, in Ethiopia, Zaire/Congo and Tanzania for 11 years with Mennonite Central Committee.
Members of the school community are receiving support from pastors and grief counselors.
“The Bethany Christian Schools community grieves the loss of a beloved faculty member, Peter Shetler,” said Bethany in a statement. “He died from injuries after being struck by a car this morning. Your prayers are welcome.”
The Goshen News reported police officers were called to respond to a pedestrian/vehicle accident at 8:19 a.m. Shetler had a head injury and was being aided by medically trained bystanders. He was transported to a hospital in South Bend, where he died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Matthew Miller, a seventh- and eighth-grade social studies teacher at Bethany. He told police the sun’s glare blinded him at the time of the accident.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 3 at College Mennonite Church in Goshen.
